چکیده

a bacterial septicaemia occurred in 3-female oscars (astronotus ocellatus) of about 2-year old held in 300l freshwater aquaria in south tehran. the external signs of infected fish consisted of lethargy, anaemia, distension (clinical dropsy), exophthalmia and cataract. internally there was a large amount of red-ascitic fluid accumulated in the abdominal cavity with haemorrhages/ hyperaemia of internal organs, in particular, liver kidney, peritoneum as well as the presence of dark-brown dots on the surface of liver. kidney was enlarged and undergone liqufactive necrosis. the bacterio logical examination resulted in isolation of single and pure gram negative rod bacterium in which biochemical and physiological characters resembles of aeromonas veronii biovar sobria. experimentally, this isolate was relatively virulent to goldfish of 2-5g at 20-23c. more details of condition such as histopathological features and possible predisposing factors are given in the text.

Characterization and antimicrobial susceptibility of motile aeromonads isolated from freshwater ornamental fish showing signs of septicaemia.

A total of 74 phenotypically identified presumptive motile Aeromonas isolates recovered from septicaemic freshwater ornamental fish in Sri Lanka were genetically characterized by sequencing of rpoD and gyrB genes. rpoD/gyrB phylogeny confirmed only 53 isolates as Aeromonas, among which A. veronii was the predominant species (79.2%), followed by A. hydrophila (7.5%), A. caviae (5.7%), A. jandaei...

Social isolation and aggressiveness in the Amazonian juvenile fish Astronotus ocellatus.

We tested the effect of social isolation on the aggressiveness of an Amazonian fish: Astronotus ocellatus. Ten juvenile fishes were transferred from a group aquarium (60 x 60 x 40 cm) containing 15 individuals (without distinguishing sex) to an isolation aquarium (50 x 40 x 40 cm). Aggressiveness was tested by means of attacks on and displays toward the mirror image. The behavior was video-reco...

Diagnostic imaging of a renal adenoma in a Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829).

This case report describes the radiographic, ultrasonographic and computed tomographic (CT) examination of an abdominal swelling in a Red Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829). While radiography only demonstrated caudoventral compression of the swimbladder, ultrasonography found a huge tumor-like parenchyma in the caudal abdomen. CT studies detected a possible connection between the tumor a...

The Naturally Occurring Accommodative Response of the Oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, to Visual Stimuli

Observation of the naturally-occurring accommodative response of a highly visual teleost species provides the opportunity to study its stimulus-response accuracy. A video recording system, linked to a computer digitizing program, was used to measure accommodative changes in lens position in the oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, in response to known food stimuli. The largest lens deviations occurred ...

A Comparison of nutritional value of Biomar diet and earthworm as feed on growth performance and survival of ornamental Oscar fish (Asteronotus ocellatus)

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) in diet for Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus) in a randomized design with three treatments in triplicates using 9 aquarium for 9 weeks. Twenty pieces of Oscar fish with average weight 3.6±0.5 g were stocked in each replication. The earthworm meal (as fed) at the levels of 0, 50 and 100% was replaced with Biomar...

Selectivity in regeneration of the oculomotor nerve in the cichlid fish, Astronotus ocellatus.

IT has long been considered a general rule for nerve regeneration that the reinnervation of skeletal muscle is nonselective. Regenerating nerve fibers are supposed to reconnect with one skeletal muscle as readily as another according to studies covering a wide range of vertebrates (Weiss, 1937; Weiss & Taylor, 1944; Weiss & Hoag, 1946; Bernstein & Guth, 1961; Guth, 1961, 1962, 1963). Similarly,...
